Rob Whitehead

“Tasting Royal Brackla is an infrequent but invariable pleasure. This particular whisky, after a period of additional maturation in an ex-PX sherry cask, has a luscious helping of dried fruit richness and nicely supple tannins on the finish. Whisper it quietly, but this distillery seems to be on a real upswing – and it all starts with their impeccably distilled spirit that seems to marry so beautifully with sherry cask influence.”

Tasting Notes

This delicious Brackla was matured for around 12 years in refill hogsheads before being given an additional 2 years in a fresh ex-Pedro Ximenez butt. The nose is a wonderfully spiced mix of fresh and dried fruits; apples, pears and melon from the distillate and sticky figs and dates from the wood. The palate leans more towards the thick sherry wood influence with prunes, clove rock, toffee and honeycomb all swirling round. A perfect seasonal dram to get your claws into after a busy Christmas Day!

Distillery

The Brackla distillery was built in 1812 by Captain William Fraser of Brackla House on the Cawdor Castle estate in Inverness-shire. Such was the quality of its spirits; the distillery was the first to be granted a Royal Warrant by King William IV in 1833 as the chosen whisky of his court. The Warrant was renewed by Queen Victoria in 1838.
